Beaver Park Ranger, Verla Brooks, guides students from Philip W. Sugg Middle School in Lisbon during a service-learning project.

Lisbon - Students at Philip W. Sugg (PWS) Middle School recently completed a service-learning project at Beaver Park in Lisbon.  Located off of Cotton Road, Beaver Park is a family oriented day use park that is used by residents and non-residents of Lisbon.  The project was initiated by teachers and staff at PWS, consisting of Ms. Sue Welch, Mrs. Veronica Koza, and Mrs. Karen Bergeron.

Under the direction of Verla Brooks, park ranger, the PWS students dismantled a bridge that was in much needed repair.  From there, students transported materials and select natural resources to the bridge site on the trail.  Beginning with the moment the students arrived on the work site and throughout the process, student showed great initiative and motivation to overcome the natural obstacles and to get the job done right.  "I am not surprised by the great effort and results these students put forth on this project, in fact, they do this everyday in some of the most difficult and challenging tasks here at school.  I am very proud of these students and excellent work they have done for the betterment of our school and community," said Assistant Principal Thomas Landberg.

The Park also provides a cross-country course for the PWS and Lisbon High School cross country teams, hosting two events annually. Be sure to visit Beaver Park to experience the natural beauty of the Maine woods here in Lisbon.

Lisbon - Have you ever wanted to go to New York to see a Broadway Show?  Maybe you’d like to see a production of Annie?  One doesn’t have to travel all the way to NYC to see Annie.  This weekend The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow right here in Lisbon! The Lisbon High School Drama Club will be performing the timeless classic, Annie Jr.  If you haven’t seen the movie Annie, the storyline is about an orphan girl who never gives up hope of finding her real parents. “I believe a drama program is important for many reasons: Drama provides an opportunity for students to learn self-discipline, to work together with others as an ensemble. Students learn how to control their bodies through choreography and movement, and how to memorize quickly,” shares Lisbon High School Drama Advisor, Jennifer Fox.  “Students who participate in drama gain self-confidence by performing in front of an audience, as well as leadership skills. Students learn all they can and help those who are new to acting.  A drama program allows students to give back to their community and foster pride in their school.”   “I am so grateful to be the Advisor for the LHS Drama Club and have the opportunity to work with such a talented group of students,” said Fox. The curtain will go up at the Lisbon High School Gym on Friday, November 13 and Saturday, November 14 at 7:00 pm, and again on Sunday, November 15 at 2:00 pm. Tickets for the show are a $3 donation.  FMI Jenifer Fox at 353-3030, email jfox@lisbonschoolsme.org.  Tickets will also be available at the door. The score of the show includes some of Broadways’ most memorable songs including, It’s a Hard Knock Life, Easy Street, and N.Y.C. You won’t want to miss this classic production, get your tickets today!

How do you feel President Obama has been doing the first nine months of his administration?

I noticed he's sending troops to Afghanistan, and there hasn't been any news on taking the troops out of Iraq.  At least I haven't heard of him taking them out. Maybe I don't watch the news at the right time. The other thing I've heard is he's been helping fund banks and health care. If there's no way for him to supervise the money being spent, then I think he needs to pay a bit more attention on how they money is spent. But otherwise, I think he's been doing a good job.

Robert Dall
Grade 8

Well I think President Obama has been doing well. He's trying his best. He's doing his best with the economy and with the health care issue.

Sierra Crosby
Grade 8

I think the President is trying his hardest. He might be doing tons of good things, but I still think he is trying to make everyone like him.

Keely Domini
Grade 8

I don't think President Obama has done well so far.  He keeps spending more money and putting us further in debit.
Roxanna Carlson
Grade 8

I think the President has been very ambitious, and has handled opposition well.

What are your feelings on this year’s up coming flu season? Are you planning on getting a flu shot? If not, why?

I think they are completely over-rating the flu season this year. It isn't as bad as it was last year. I mean, I understand the swine flu epidemic, but it's partially died out by now. I've gotten a flu shot just in case, but I don't really see the reason why.
- Brittany Couillard, Grade 8

I'm not sure about getting a flu shot this year. I haven't gotten one yet. But, I'm sure my mom will make me. I would have to say there's quite a bit of an epidemic out there, and there's a lot of reported cases of the flu."
- Patrick Dexler, Grade 7

We are over reacting to the flu, and no I'm not getting a flu shot because there hasn't been an outbreak.
- Josh Broadwater, Grade 8

I'm defiantly getting a flu shot.  I'm trying not to get too parodied about it. I'm using lots of hand sanitizer.
-Ms. Jacqlyn Young

Question:
What is your opinion of President Obama’s Health Care Reform?
Response:

Kayla Yates, Junior
I think the Health Reform is a bad idea because you’ll have health care but you will be paying more in taxes.

Shauna Riordan, Junior
The Health Care Reform is a bad idea all together. “Free health care” isn’t free. The government does not need to control everything!!!

Jeremy Weddle, Sophomore
I think the Health Care Reform is a bad idea because I want to earn coverage by working.
